Using the wrong cable is a common reason for weak signals and unreliable systems. Here is a quick guide.
LAN (Ethernet) cable
- Used for computer networks, Wi-Fi access points, printers and IP cameras.
- Cat5e and Cat6 are the usual choices for offices and homes.
- A single run should not exceed 100 metres.
- IP cameras can often be powered through the same cable using PoE.
Coaxial cable
- Used mainly for analog and HD-over-coax CCTV cameras connected to a DVR.
- Fitted with BNC connectors at the camera and recorder ends.
- Needs a separate power supply for each camera unless a combined cable is used.
Quick rule
IP camera or computer network: LAN cable. Analog CCTV with a DVR: coaxial cable.
Quality matters
Copper quality, proper crimping and neat routing all affect performance. We supply LAN cable, coaxial cable and connectors, along with CCTV systems that use them.
